L'HISTOIRE
Hélène Marchal, une journaliste, trouve une copie carbone d'une lettre dans la maison dont elle vient d'hériter en Bourgogne. Elle découvre quelque chose qui la bouleverse. En août 1944, un très jeune pilote américain, John Philip Garreau, s'était tué tout près de là. En fait il s'était sacrifié, renonçant à sauter parachute au dernier moment après que son Mustang P-51 ait été touché par la flak allemande, pour éviter qu'il ne tombe sur une maison, sur LA maison d'Hélène, autrefois celle de ses grand-parents. Sa mère, quatre ans à l'époque, s'y trouvait.
Hélène doit donc à Johnny Garreau d'avoir pu voir le jour... Elle réalise qu'elle a une dette immense envers ce pilote, et part dans le Montana, d'où il venait, pour tenter de trouver des informations à son sujet. Et au fil des découvertes et des rencontres, elle finit par reconstituer et écrire l'histoire de sa vie.
Beaucoup de séquences aériennes et de scènes de combat dans ce roman sur fond de guerre qui se déroule entre les années 40 et aujourd'hui, mais qui n'est pourtant pas (ou pas seulement) un "roman de guerre", ni un "roman d'aviation" au sens habituel du terme. C'est plutôt un livre sur le destin, sur le sens et le poids des histoires, qui relient les êtres entre eux dans le temps et dans l'espace.

THE STORY
The journalist Hélène Marchal found one day a copy of a letter in the house she just inherited in Burgundy, France. She discovered something which moved her. In August 1944, a very young American pilot, John Philip Garreau, was killed very close from this house. In fact he sacrificed himself, giving up jumping parachute at the last time after his P-51 Mustang was hit by the German flak, to avoid his aircraft crashing on a house, on THE house of Helene, formerly belonging to her grandparents. Her mother, four years at the time, was there.
It meant that Hélène was born later thanks to Johnny Garreau's sacrifice. She realized that she had an enormous debt towards this pilot, and left France for Montana, his original country, to try and find information about him. After different discoveries and meetings, she started to reconstitute and write the history of the pilot's life.
Many aerial sequences and fight scenes in this novel happening between the forties and today and which is neither (only) a "war novel" nor an "aviation novel". It is rather a book on the fate, the sense of histories, which link people in the time and in the space.

Florian Rochat et moi sommes entrés en contact début 2014 au hasard des rencontres rendues aujourd'hui possibles par Internet. Après avoir fait connaissance, Florian Rochat m'envoya son livre La Légende de Little Eagle que je m'empressai de lire. Inspiré d'une histoire vraie, ce roman raconte l'aventure d'une journaliste lancée sur les traces d'un pilote américain héroique disparu aux commandes d'un P-51 Mustang en août 1944. Comme l'indique cet auteur Suisse dans la dédicace qu'il me fit le plaisir et l'honneur de m'écrire en première page de son livre, cette "fiction est bien ancrée dans la réalité". En effet, ce roman, écrit avec beaucoup de fraîcheur et de réalisme, nous plonge rapidement dans un suspense et une intrigue, mêlant les scènes de vie de l'époque à l'impatience d'une journaliste d'aujourd'hui bouleversée, en quête de vérité mais aussi et surtout ne réalisant pas qu'inconsciemment, son but est d'exprimer une impossible reconnaissance à un pilote disparu.

Florian Rochat and me entered into contact early 2014 thanks to Internet. After having exchanged some emails, Florian Rochat sent me his book, The Legend of Little Eagle, that I hastened to read. Based on a true story, this novel tells the adventure of a journalist on the tracks of a heroic American pilot lilled in action with his P-51 Mustang in August, 1944. As this Swiss author indicated in his dedication that I had the pleasure and honor to read on the first page of his book, this “fiction is well anchored in reality”. Definitely, this novel, written with so much freshness and realism, quickly plunges us in a suspense and an intrigue, mixing old times scenes of life with the impatience of a journalist today, in search of truth but above all who did not realize that unconsciously, her impossible goal was to express her recognition to a missing pilot.

La Légende de Little Eagle a été inspirée par l'histoire vraie du lieutenant LeRoy Lutz, pilote de l'USAAF, tué aux commandes de son P-38 Lightning en refusant de s'écraser sur une maison d'un petit village de Champagne appelé Mardeil. Florian Rochat trouva une lettre datée de 1947 dans le Montana, envoyée de France et qui décrivait l'acte héroïque du Lieutenant Lutz.
